Sustainable Boating

There is considerable work going on behind the scenes to develop a strategy to ensure that boating can be carried on in a sustainable and economical manner in the foreseeable future without the need to re-engine the whole canal fleet. One of the exciting developments is the possibility of using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) instead of traditional diesel fuel or the currently available bio diesel. HVO is 90% carbon neutral and can be used in most diesel engines currently in use on the canal network. The link below will take you to a paper written by Jonathan Mosse which details the many benefits associated with using this fuel.
